Thanks to mobile apps, the ability to help animals is right at your fingertips!
Sales of live animals from pet stores have been decreasing in recent years, thanks to concerns over commercial breeding operations. More people are turning to shelters and rescues to find companion animals, and our digital world is making it ever easier for them to find the right match. Mobile apps like Petfinder, AllPaws and WeRescue help you find cats and dogs at nearby shelters.
WeRescue features more than 200,000 pets available for adoption at shelters across North America, and allows you to browse through thousands of dogs and cats, and narrow your search using more than 70 filters. You can view photos as well as detailed information about an animal – how he behaves around other animals or children, whether he’s housebroken, etc. Additional information slides up from the bottom of the screen, allowing you to view shelter information, policies, adoption fees and more. When you find the right dog or cat, you can place a phone call to the shelter directly from the app, or connect with them online to begin the adoption process.
If you aren’t ready to adopt, you can help animals in need just by walking, running, or riding your bike! ResQwalk, an app by Best Friends Animal Society, lets you raise money and resources for animal welfare organizations with every step you take. Your phone tracks your movement to determine how much of the monthly “ResQpool” will be donated to your organization of choice. So far, over 2 million miles have been walked by app users in North America.
