Every June, we celebrate Social Petworking Month in an attempt to like, send and share our way toward a brighter future for homeless animals. Here’s how you can help!
You’ve heard of social networking… but what about social petworking? Simply put, this movement is a modern way to spread the word about animal welfare, and help homeless cats and dogs find their forever homes. Using social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Pinterest, you can reach hundreds – or even millions – of people. Now, it’s time to put that reach to good use! Check out the following steps to get you started.
1. Sign up on one of the above mentioned sites, or log in to your existing account.
2. Visit pet adoption websites, or search for the social media accounts belonging to local shelters and rescues. Typically, organizations will post their adoptable pets in accessible places, so you shouldn’t have to search for long.
3. Click on posts featuring pets in need of forever homes. Write a comment tagging friends or family members searching for a new furry friend, or share the post on your own page to reach more people. If you’re short on time, simply liking these posts will help them be seen by others in your social circle.
4. If you’re known for your original content, take some time to create powerful images or blurbs that emphasize the importance of adopting. Spread the word about the negative effects of purchasing animals from pet stores, the truth about puppy mills, and the dangers of irresponsible breeding.
5. Be sure to use hashtags to help your posts reach a wider audience. #adoptdontshop and #animalrescue are popular choices that will help get your message across.
6. Finally, post pictures of your own adopted animals! You and your four-legged friends have the ability to break down negative stereotypes about rescue pets just by sharing your happiness on social media! What could be simpler than that?
Remember, June might be Social Petworking Month, but you can use your voice to help animals in need all year long!
